California – California has warmly invited federal employees recently fired because of administrative cost-cutting measures under President Trump and his advisor, Elon Musk in what appears to be a calculated effort to strengthen its workforce. Led by the California Department of Human Resources, this program aims to hire these people to fill more than 3,200 job openings in the state.
A part of the Trump administration’s larger effort to downsize government agencies and cut federal spending, the layoffs have impacted tens of thousands of federal employees. The Department of Health and Human Services announced over 10,000 layoffs just this week, most of which were at a San Francisco location.
Announced last Friday by Monica Erickson, chief deputy director of the California Department of Human Resources, California’s recruitment campaign emphasizes occupations essential to the service sectors of the state, including firefighters, clinical social workers, and psychologists. Erickson, who has worked for the state department for over 30 years, underlined the importance of the skill sets these federal workers provide.
“This is an incredible opportunity for California to be able to get workers that have incredible skill sets that California is looking for,” said Erickson to KQED. “We have great opportunities.”
Governor Gavin Newsom has been aggressive in his approach, having ordered last month for the California Human Resources Department (CalHR) to coordinate initiatives to draw these workers. A resource website run by the state helps current or former federal workers grasp the California employment application procedure. Especially in specialized sectors like firefighting, science, and health services, the website also allows candidates to locate career opportunities matching their qualifications.
“California values the skillset and experience federal workers bring to public service — and we want them to know that there is a place for them here in the Golden State,” Newsom said in a statement to KQED. “Recruiting these experienced professionals to fill key job openings in a variety of fields can help us now and into the future.”
Although other states, notably New York and Hawaii, have started programs to attract federal workers, California’s initiatives stand out for their thorough support tools. Launched by Governor Kathy Hochul in February, New York’s “You’re Hired” campaign has received over 1,300 job applications from federal employees, with 28 now employed. Hawaii, under Governor Josh Green, has streamlined its hiring process to accommodate federal workers more swiftly, a measure California has yet to adopt.
Since tracking started on March 7, 165 ex-federal workers in California have set up online accounts to seek state employment. Though the state still pushes additional applications via its several resources and forthcoming events, the precise number of hires is still unknown. CalHR has scheduled a virtual training course this Thursday exclusively for former federal employees explaining how to deal with the application procedure for a state position.
