Lane reductions and safety upgrades coming to Marysville Boulevard during Sacramento construction project

Published on

Sacramento, California – Work has begun on a traffic safety project along Marysville Boulevard, marking the start of a series of changes aimed at making the busy corridor safer for drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians. Crews launched construction the week of March 16 as part of the City of Sacramento’s Marysville Boulevard Vision Zero Quick-Build Phase 1 project, with work expected to continue through early May.

The project focuses on the stretch of Marysville Boulevard between Los Robles Boulevard and Harris Avenue. City officials say the improvements are designed to reduce crashes while creating a safer, more balanced roadway for everyone who uses it.

During construction, traffic will continue moving through the corridor, but drivers should prepare for a different experience behind the wheel. The road will temporarily operate with a single lane in each direction, and travelers may encounter shifting traffic patterns and intermittent lane closures as crews move through the work zone. Street parking may also be temporarily limited near active construction areas.

Several turning restrictions will also be in place. From March 16 through March 30, left turns at Marysville Boulevard and Roanoke Avenue will not be allowed while paving work takes place in the center median. Additional temporary restrictions are expected later in April when crews apply pavement slurry seal along portions of the corridor.

Despite the construction activity, pedestrian routes and driveway access will remain open. Nearby residents and property owners will be notified before work begins near their locations, helping them plan around the temporary disruptions.

Some of the work near Grant Union High School and Michael J. Castori Elementary School has been scheduled during spring break, from March 30 to April 5, to minimize the impact on students and families in the area.

According to Public Works supervising engineer Judy Matsui-Drury, the project will bring meaningful safety improvements, though construction may temporarily inconvenience those who travel or live nearby. Crews are working to complete the work as efficiently and safely as possible.

Once finished, the roadway will look noticeably different. The project will convert the current four-lane layout into two travel lanes, a configuration often referred to as a “road diet.” Buffered and protected bike lanes, new pavement markings, updated signage, and improved traffic signals at key intersections will also be added. Crews will also apply a fresh pavement surface and adjust parts of the roadway median to support the redesigned street layout.

City officials say the project supports Sacramento’s Vision Zero initiative, which aims to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries. By using a quick-build approach, the city can introduce safety improvements more rapidly while planning for future long-term upgrades along the corridor.

Drivers traveling through the construction area are encouraged to slow down and remain alert as work progresses. Residents and commuters seeking updates can visit marysvilleblvd.org or contact the project team by email or phone for the latest information.
