Sacramento, California – Sacramento’s trees are about to become the focus of a new community effort, and residents will have an opportunity to help shape what happens next.
The city is moving forward with its urban forest plans, but putting those plans into action will require more than decisions made inside City Hall. A newly announced working group is intended to bring interested residents into the process.
The City of Sacramento Public Works Department has announced that its Climate Action and Sustainability Team is launching the Urban Forest Plan Implementation Working Group, creating a new opportunity for community participation as the city moves into the implementation stage of its Urban Forest Plan.
To introduce the initiative, city officials have scheduled an in-person informational session for Monday, November 9, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The meeting will take place at the Hart Senior Center, located at 915 27th Street in Sacramento.
The hour-long gathering will give residents an opportunity to learn what the working group is expected to do, how its activities will be organized and when people can become involved.
City officials will also explain the group’s timeline and the process for joining.
The announcement marks another step in Sacramento’s efforts to address its urban forest through the city’s broader climate action and sustainability work. Rather than simply announcing another planning initiative, the department is preparing to establish a group specifically focused on putting the existing Urban Forest Plan into practice.
For residents interested in the future of Sacramento’s trees and the city’s environmental planning, the upcoming meeting offers an early opportunity to understand the initiative before the application period begins.
That application window will open on November 9, the same day as the informational session, and remain open through December 31.
The nearly two-month period gives interested community members time to review the program and consider applying. The city has not included details about the working group’s membership structure or specific responsibilities in its initial announcement, but those interested in learning more can attend the November meeting.
Importantly, residents do not need to register in advance to participate in the informational session.
The Public Works Department is encouraging advance registration, however, to help organize attendance. Those planning to attend can RSVP through the city’s online registration form.
The meeting is open to residents who want to learn about the group, including those who have not yet decided whether to apply.
Sacramento officials are also directing the public to the city’s website for additional information about the initiative. Details about the working group and its implementation process are available on the Urban Forest Plan Implementation Working Group webpage.
With applications scheduled to remain open through the end of December, the November 9 gathering will serve as the starting point for residents looking to participate in this next stage of Sacramento’s urban forest planning.
For now, the immediate opportunity is straightforward: attend the informational session, learn how the working group will operate and decide whether to get involved before the December 31 application deadline.
