Sacramento residents have just days left to help shape the city’s next police chief selection

Published on

Sacramento, California – Choosing Sacramento’s next police chief is a decision that could shape the city’s approach to public safety for years. But before that decision is made, residents have an opportunity to tell city leaders exactly what they expect from the person who will lead the Sacramento Police Department.

The clock is ticking. With a November 5 deadline approaching, Sacramento City Councilmember Caity Maple is urging residents to complete an important survey and make their voices heard in the search for the city’s next top law enforcement official.

Maple recently encouraged Sacramento residents to participate in the public feedback process, directing them to an online questionnaire designed to help city officials better understand community expectations as they prepare to hire the next police chief.

The message is straightforward: Sacramento residents have a chance to weigh in, but they must act before the deadline.

The City of Sacramento is currently looking to hire its next police chief and wants community members to contribute their opinions about the future direction of the Police Department.

The survey focuses on several important areas, including public safety priorities, residents’ expectations of the Sacramento Police Department and the leadership qualities they believe the next chief should possess.

These questions give residents an opportunity to identify what matters most to them when it comes to policing in Sacramento.

For some, the most important consideration may be the department’s approach to public safety. Others may place greater emphasis on leadership, communication or the relationship between officers and the communities they serve. The survey provides a way for residents to express their own priorities rather than leaving those expectations entirely to city officials.

The feedback comes as Sacramento prepares for an important leadership transition within its Police Department. The next chief will take on responsibility for leading the department, making the selection process an important decision for both city government and the community.

By encouraging participation, Maple is helping bring attention to the opportunity for residents to contribute to that process before the hiring decision is made.

City officials are asking residents to complete the online survey by Thursday, November 5, 2026.

The questionnaire is available at cityofsacramento.org/chiefsurvey.

With only a short time remaining, Maple’s message to Sacramento residents is clear: take a few moments to participate in the survey and share what qualities and priorities should guide the city’s search for its next police chief.

The opportunity to provide feedback is open now, but the November 5 deadline is fast approaching.
