Sacramento youth get a free first splash as District 8 pools reopen for summer, sponsored by Councilmember Mai Vang

Sacramento, California – Sacramento families will have another way to beat the summer heat on Saturday, June 13, when Pannell Meadowview Pool and Cabrillo Pool reopen for the season with free admission for youth in District 8.

The opening-day offer is being sponsored by the Office of Councilmember Mai Vang, who is inviting local families to start the summer at two neighborhood pools that have long served as gathering places during Sacramento’s hottest months. The free swim day is aimed at helping young people stay cool, active and connected as school lets out and temperatures begin to climb.

At Pannell Meadowview Pool, located at 2450 Meadowview Road, youth can swim for free from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. The pool is connected to the Meadowview Community Center and includes features such as a zero-entry pool, fountain elements, a 25-yard lap pool, picnic areas and a slide. The city lists Pannell Meadowview’s regular summer recreation swim season from June 13 through August 9, with extended back-to-school season hours scheduled from August 10 through September 7.

At Cabrillo Pool, located at 1648 65th Avenue, free youth admission will be available from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The city describes Cabrillo as a recreation swim site with a zero-entry play pool, fountain feature, shaded deck area, picnic tables and open swim space. Its regular summer recreation swim schedule also begins June 13 and runs through August 9.

The city’s usual recreation swim admission is listed at $5 for adults and $3 for youth ages 2 to 17, making the opening-day sponsorship a direct savings for families bringing children to the pool.

The effort also comes with a look beyond the first splash of summer. According to the announcement, the City of Sacramento’s Youth, Parks, & Community Enrichment Department will expand access this year with extended after-school recreation swim hours at Pannell Meadowview Pool during the back-to-school season.

Residents with questions can contact the District 8 Office at 916-808-7008 or email [email protected]. For Vang’s team, known as Team #HeartandHustle, the message is simple: summer is here, the pools are opening, and the community is invited in.
