Sacramento, California – For two hours this October, Coloma Community Center will offer Sacramento families a trade that is hard to complicate: kids get pizza, crafts and a glowing dance floor, while parents get a Friday evening to themselves.
The twist is that the party will not sound much like a traditional dance. Each child will wear wireless headphones, choose a music channel and control the volume during Sacramento’s upcoming Kids Night Out: Silent Disco Glow.
The City of Sacramento Department of Youth, Parks & Community Enrichment will host the event Friday, Oct. 23, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Coloma Community Center, 4623 T Street in East Sacramento. The program is designed for children ages 6 through 11.
YPCE summed up the idea on Facebook: “Kids get a night of glowing fun, and parents get a night off.”
According to the city’s event materials, the two-hour program will include pizza, games, crafts and dancing. Instead of playing one soundtrack through large speakers, the silent disco uses wireless headphones that allow children to move between available music channels. They can also adjust their own volume while still sharing the same dance floor.
The setup gives the evening a different feel from a typical youth dance, with the room itself staying relatively quiet even while the party continues.
Registration is required in advance. The program appears in Sacramento’s recreation catalog as CCC Kids Night Out – Silent Disco Glow!, activity #32672. Families can search for the activity through the city’s online recreation registration system or register in person at Coloma Community Center.
The city’s catalog directs users to view fee details rather than displaying one flat price in the event information, so families should confirm the current cost and availability before registering. Scholarship assistance is also available through YPCE for eligible households.
Coloma Community Center includes an auditorium and stage, dance rooms, a kitchen, playground and courtyard and regularly hosts city recreation programs. Families with questions about registration, pickup procedures, allergies or other requirements can contact the center at (916) 808-6060.
The center also has another fall family program scheduled earlier in October, with Halloween BINGO planned for Friday, Oct. 9, from 6 to 8 p.m.
For the Oct. 23 silent disco, the focus is simpler: food, games, crafts and two hours of glowing, headphone-powered dancing. Additional event information is available through the Facebook event page.
