Sacramento wants public input before automated red-light cameras begin issuing civil citations across the city

Published on

Sacramento, California – Sacramento residents are being asked to weigh in before automated red-light cameras potentially become part of the city’s traffic-safety strategy. With intersections accounting for most crashes in Sacramento over the past decade, officials say public input will help shape what the proposed enforcement program ultimately looks like.

The numbers behind the discussion are significant. From 2015 through 2024, 80% of Sacramento traffic collisions occurred at intersections, while red-light running contributed to 160 crashes that resulted in a death or serious injury.

The City of Sacramento will hold a community workshop Wednesday, October 7, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Washington Elementary School, 520 18th Street in Sacramento. Residents, business owners, neighbors and other community members are invited to attend.

During the workshop, participants will be able to meet the project team, review proposed locations for automated cameras, ask questions about the program and share their own traffic-safety priorities. City officials are encouraging attendees to offer feedback before decisions about the program move forward.

The proposed Automated Red Light Camera Enforcement Program is being explored as part of Sacramento’s Vision Zero effort, which is focused on eliminating traffic deaths.

The program would operate under the Safer Streets Program established by Senate Bill 720, also known as the Safer Streets Act. The legislation created a new framework for automated red-light enforcement in California.

One major difference under Sacramento’s proposal is how violations would be handled. Red-light camera violations would be treated as civil offenses rather than criminal offenses.

Money generated through the program would also be directed toward Vision Zero street-safety improvements instead of being deposited into Sacramento’s General Fund.

City officials have emphasized that the October 7 workshop is intended to give the public an opportunity to influence the proposal while it is still being developed. Attendees can examine potential camera locations and raise questions or concerns directly with the project team.

Those planning to attend can RSVP at bit.ly/SacramentoRedLightSafety.

Additional information about the proposed program is available at visionzerosac.org/redlight. Questions can also be directed to Funding and Asset Planning Manager Chris Dougherty at [email protected].

The City’s message ahead of the workshop is straightforward: public feedback will help determine what happens next.
