Sacramento, California – A Sacramento homicide investigation that began with gunfire in the middle of the night has now reached a major turning point. Detectives say two men have been arrested after investigators spent months pursuing leads connected to the deadly September 2024 shooting.
The arrests mark the first announced breakthrough in a case that initially left police without any suspect information to release.
The investigation dates back to Saturday, Sept. 7, 2024, when Sacramento Police Department officers were called to the 4000 block of 4th Avenue shortly after 2:30 a.m. following reports of a shooting.
When officers arrived, they found two adult men suffering from at least one gunshot wound each. Sacramento Fire personnel transported both victims to an area hospital, but one of the men later died from his injuries.
Because the shooting became a homicide investigation, detectives and crime scene investigators took over the case. Police said investigators planned to process the scene, canvass the surrounding area and interview witnesses while working to determine what led to the violence.
At the time, authorities said the circumstances remained under investigation and no information about a possible suspect was available to the public. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office was responsible for releasing the identity of the man who died after his next of kin had been notified.
Police have now announced that the investigation produced arrest warrants for two suspects.
According to the department’s update, detectives secured homicide arrest warrants for 22-year-old Javon Crump of Antelope and 36-year-old Dion Murphy of Elk Grove following what police described as an extensive investigation and a “relentless pursuit of the suspects.”
Both men were subsequently arrested on the warrants and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail.
The arrests represent a significant development from the early hours of the investigation, when police had no suspect information to share. Authorities did not provide additional details in the update about what evidence led detectives to Crump and Murphy or the specific circumstances investigators believe surrounded the shooting.
The Sacramento Police Department has previously asked anyone with information about the case to contact its dispatch center at (916) 808-5471 or Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers at (916) 443-HELP (4357).
