Councilmember Lisa Kaplan outlines major changes coming to North Natomas with new parks, road improvements and development plans

Published on

Sacramento California – Several projects that Sacramento Councilmember Lisa Kaplan says have been years in the making are beginning to move from planning tables toward visible progress in District 1.

Kaplan highlighted that momentum in a press release following her bi-annual District 1 Community Conversation, held Thursday, Oct. 15, at Heron School. The meeting brought residents, city staff and local partners together for updates ranging from economic development and parks to mail theft, traffic and future zoning changes.

Kaplan said she and her team have worked on some of the initiatives for much of her first term, making the recent progress particularly significant.

Economic development was one of the major themes. Kaplan discussed the Tourism Improvement District she is championing, the city’s partnership with BMX and work toward creating a memorandum of understanding with the Sacramento Botanical Garden Group.

Attention also turned to the continued buildout of North Natomas Regional Park. Among the items discussed was Kaplan’s push for competition soccer fields, part of the broader effort to expand recreational opportunities at the park.

Public safety remains another focus for the councilmember’s office. Kaplan provided an update on efforts to address mail theft, including coordination with the U.S. Postal Service and a task force she helped establish in partnership with the Sacramento County District Attorney. Her office is also holding regular meetings with USPS and the Sacramento Police Department as part of that work.

Transportation and neighborhood connectivity projects featured heavily in the discussion as well. Kaplan updated residents on planned overcrossings in Northlake and at Snowy Egret near East Commerce Way. She also pointed to upcoming traffic modifications intended to improve conditions along East Commerce, along with additional quick-build projects and road improvements.

Residents also heard directly from city staff about zoning changes connected to Sacramento’s 2040 General Plan. Kaplan said additional information on those changes will be shared as the process continues.

For residents who could not attend, Kaplan’s office plans to upload a recording of the meeting to its YouTube channel next week. The channel can be accessed through the District 1 website.

Kaplan thanked city employees and community partners who participated and said the meetings remain an important way to hear concerns, identify solutions and keep residents informed about work underway across District 1.
