Limited time outings this Valentine aim to reveal true personalities of Sacramento shelter dogs

Published on

Sacramento, California – This year, the Front Street Animal Shelter is doing something new for Valentine’s Day. From February 12 to 14, they are holding a unique “Doggie Day Out” event where people can spend time with dogs who are available for adoption.

People who wish to take part need to sign up ahead of time on the shelter’s website. You can pick up your dog at 9 a.m. on the day of their outing and have to bring them back between 1 and 4 p.m. The initiative, which only lasts for a short time, is meant to give shelter dogs a respite from their kennels and let them meet people who might want to adopt them.

Staff at the shelter say that even a few hours outside may make a big difference. Andrea Haverland, the public information coordinator, said that the event is aimed to mix a simple holiday activity with something that helps the animals directly. Dogs may be more likely to be adopted if they get more attention, exercise, and time in a new place. This might help them relax and express their true personality.

People will usually be paired with dogs that weigh at least 40 pounds. A lot of the animals that are available are young, active, and good for outdoor activities. Assignments depend on availability and which dogs need time away from the shelter the most.

Volunteers are encouraged to organize safe outings with dogs, such walks around the neighborhood, trips to local parks, or short stops for dog treats. Dogs must stay on a leash and not play with other dogs during the trip.

After they get back to the shelter, participants are invited to fill out a short survey and send in pictures from their trip. These updates help staff make each dog’s adoption profile stronger. Anyone who makes a strong connection during the visit can choose to adopt or foster. Sign-ups are required, and space in the program is limited.
