Sacramento, California – A weeks-long investigation by Sacramento Police Department bike officers in the downtown core ended with a residential search and the discovery of more than 100 drug-smoking pipes already loaded with methamphetamine.
The case also led officers to marijuana, illegal fireworks and several realistic-looking BB guns, turning what began as a narcotics investigation into a broader seizure of potentially dangerous items.
According to SPD, bike officers had been investigating narcotics activity in downtown Sacramento for several weeks before the operation culminated in a residential search warrant earlier this month.
During the search, officers reported finding more than 100 smoking pipes preloaded with methamphetamine. They also recovered approximately one pound of marijuana, illegal fireworks and multiple BB guns designed to closely resemble real firearms.
Police arrested 49-year-old Sacramento resident Shawn Wood on charges related to the investigation. SPD did not provide additional details about the specific charges in the information released.
The investigation highlights the role of bicycle officers beyond routine patrols in Sacramento’s downtown streets. Their work can place officers in close contact with activity occurring at street level, and in this case, the investigation continued for weeks before officers moved forward with the search warrant.
The quantity of drug paraphernalia recovered was a notable part of the case. Rather than finding only unused pipes or a small amount of suspected narcotics, officers said more than 100 pipes had already been prepared with methamphetamine.
SPD described the operation as another example of the department’s effort to remove dangerous narcotics and drug paraphernalia from the city.
The department has not released further information about the investigation or whether additional arrests are expected.
