Sacramento, California – A reported assault on a vehicle led Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies to a confrontation outside a Hillsdale Boulevard home Tuesday evening. Within minutes of their arrival, the man they had detained became unresponsive and died despite efforts to save him.
The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said two civilians were holding the man on the ground when deputies reached the scene. Deputies placed him in handcuffs without incident, according to the department, before he became unresponsive a short time later.
The encounter began around 5:30 p.m. on November 3, when a caller reported an assault in progress in the 5400 block of Hillsdale Boulevard. The caller initially told dispatchers that an adult man had struck his vehicle with his hand.
That report soon became more serious. An update to the call indicated that the same man had forced his way into a nearby home and was physically assaulting someone who lived there.
Deputies arrived approximately three minutes after the initial call. They found the man on the ground, restrained by the resident and the person who had called for help. The sheriff’s office described the man as screaming incoherently when deputies approached.
After deputies handcuffed him, the situation quickly became a medical emergency. When he became unresponsive, deputies immediately began lifesaving measures and requested an emergency response from the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District.
Fire personnel arrived and continued those efforts. The man was pronounced dead at the scene despite attempts by deputies and firefighters to save him.
The preliminary investigation provided a fuller account of the confrontation that preceded the deputies’ arrival. According to the sheriff’s office, the caller had been driving through the area when the man struck his vehicle. The driver turned around and then saw the man banging on the door of a nearby residence before a physical altercation developed with the resident.
The resident told investigators that the man forcibly entered his home. He said he managed to push the man back outside, but the confrontation continued in the front yard.
During that struggle, the man reportedly struck the resident in the head multiple times. The resident sustained injuries described as superficial and told deputies he did not need medical attention.
The caller then intervened, helping the resident restrain the man on the ground. The two continued holding him until deputies arrived and took him into custody, according to the preliminary account.
The sequence outlined by the sheriff’s office places the physical struggle with the two civilians before the man was handcuffed by deputies. His loss of responsiveness occurred shortly after he was detained.
The information released describes the reported assault, the restraint and the emergency response, but does not provide a cause of death. It also does not identify the man who died.
