Sacramento, California – Sacramento police say a wanted shooting suspect turned a late-night contact into a long, careful search on June 28, drawing SWAT, crisis negotiators, K9 officers and drone support into the 3000 block of 51st Avenue.
It was not a quick arrest. It became the kind of call where officers had to slow the scene down, widen the search and treat every movement as a possible risk. The suspect, police said, was wanted in connection with a previous shooting and was believed to be armed.
According to the Sacramento Police Department, officers first contacted the suspect in the area before he ran away on foot. During the chase, police said, he threw away a satchel that contained a handgun. Officers also reported seeing him carrying what they believed was another handgun as he fled.
That changed the response immediately. Police said the combination of a wanted shooting suspect, possible additional firearm, and a difficult search area led the department to call in several specialized units. SWAT, the Crisis Negotiation Team, K9 officers and Uncrewed Aerial Systems units were all brought to the scene.
The search lasted several hours. Police said officers used specialized equipment and tactics as they worked through what they described as a complicated and difficult area to search. The goal was to find the suspect without creating more danger for officers, residents or the suspect himself.
The break came from K9 Bingo. Police said the K9 located the suspect hiding inside a vehicle. Officers then arrested him on related charges.
The department said the June 28 response was the second SWAT, Crisis Negotiation Team and UAS callout of the night. Despite the long shift and the demands of back-to-back high-risk incidents, police said the wanted suspect was safely taken into custody.
In its account of the incident, the Sacramento Police Department credited the outcome to training, tactics and specialized equipment. The department said the involved units “consistently demonstrate exceptional expertise” and respond “at the highest level” when called upon.
