Sacramento, California – Sacramento residents curious about getting around on two wheels, or two small electric ones, have another chance this summer to learn the basics without having to own any equipment first. The city’s Transportation Planning team is continuing its free Urban Biking & Scooting 101 series, designed to help people feel more comfortable navigating city streets.
The classes have been running monthly from May through August, mixing practical instruction with a low-pressure introduction to urban travel by bicycle and scooter. Participants do not need to bring a bike or scooter, and those who attend can leave with City of Sacramento bicycle swag.
The program is aimed at people who want to better understand how biking and scooting fit into everyday transportation in Sacramento. Rather than requiring previous riding experience, the sessions are open to residents looking for basic guidance and greater confidence before heading out on local streets.
Two August options are available, giving participants a choice between joining online or attending in person.
The August virtual class, offered in English, is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 11, from noon to 1 p.m. Registration is available through the city’s Microsoft Teams event page.
A second session will be held in person on Tuesday, Aug. 18, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Colonial Heights Library, 4799 Stockton Blvd. That class will also be offered in English, with advance registration available online.
The neighborhood-based approach gives residents another way to learn about active transportation without committing to a longer course or needing specialized gear. With one-hour sessions and both virtual and in-person formats in August, the program keeps the time commitment relatively small while still offering a structured introduction.
It also brings the city’s transportation education directly into community spaces, making the information easier to access for people who may be interested in biking or scooting but have not yet tried it regularly.
Sacramento has promoted the classes throughout the summer as part of its broader transportation planning and active transportation work. The focus is simple: give people useful information, answer common questions and help remove some of the uncertainty that can come with traveling by bicycle or scooter in an urban setting.
More information about Urban Biking & Scooting 101, including program details, is available on the City of Sacramento website.
