Sacramento residents invited to celebrate books and storytelling during community Literacy Festival

Sacramento, California – A good story can do more than fill a few pages. It can bring families together, spark conversations and inspire children to discover the joy of reading. Sometimes, it can even help neighbors build stronger connections with one another.

That spirit will take center stage on October 17, when the Cabrillo Park Neighborhood Association brings families together for a Literacy Festival at John Bidwell Elementary School. The gathering promises an opportunity to celebrate learning while strengthening community ties.

Scheduled for Saturday, October 17, 2026, the festival will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at John Bidwell Elementary School, located at 1730 65th Avenue. The four-hour event will focus on the importance of literacy, the value of education and the special role stories can play in bringing people together.

Organizers are encouraging residents to attend with their families and invite neighbors to join them. The invitation extends to households throughout the community, with particular attention to inspiring young people to develop an interest in books and reading.

The festival’s message is simple but meaningful. Reading is not only an activity that takes place inside a classroom. It can become a shared experience between children, parents, relatives and friends, creating opportunities for conversation, imagination and learning.

For young readers, encouragement from the people around them can make a lasting difference. Discovering an interesting story, asking questions about its characters or sharing a favorite book with family members can help make reading a more enjoyable part of everyday life.

That broader connection between literacy and community is central to the upcoming festival.

The Cabrillo Park Neighborhood Association is also using the occasion to encourage greater interaction among local families. By bringing residents together around a shared interest in education, the event offers an opportunity for neighbors to meet and spend time with one another.

Community members are being asked to help publicize the festival and share the invitation with other families in their neighborhoods. The association hopes that residents will take advantage of the gathering to celebrate both reading and the relationships that make a community stronger.

The event will take place at John Bidwell Elementary School on Saturday, October 17, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Whether families attend to encourage their children’s interest in reading or simply to connect with neighbors, the Literacy Festival offers a chance to recognize how learning and storytelling can bring people closer together.
