Sacramento vice mayor mourns 16-year-old killed in Northgate/South Natomas shooting: “No family should suffer”

Sacramento, California – Sacramento Vice Mayor Karina Talamantes issued a statement Sunday after the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old boy in the Northgate/South Natomas area, calling the teenager’s death a heartbreaking loss for the community and urging anyone with information to contact investigators.

The shooting happened around 12:30 a.m. in the 500 block of Wisconsin Avenue, west of Northgate Boulevard, near Jimboy’s Tacos. Sacramento Police Department officers responded after reports of gunfire and found the teen suffering from at least one gunshot wound. Lifesaving efforts were attempted, but the boy was pronounced dead at the scene.

His name had not been publicly released in many initial reports, which is common in cases involving juvenile victims while officials work through family notifications and the early stages of an investigation.

Talamantes, whose district includes the area, said the death of a child is a kind of pain no family should ever have to face.

“I am heartbroken to learn of the tragic loss of a 16-year-old in our community this morning. No family should ever have to endure the pain of losing a child, and my thoughts are with the young man’s loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” Vice Mayor Karina Talamantes said.

Police have described the case as an active homicide investigation. As of the latest details provided, no arrests had been announced, and no suspect information had been publicly released. Initial reports also did not mention additional victims.

The area where the shooting occurred sits in a mixed residential and commercial stretch of North Sacramento/Natomas, a place where homes, small businesses and busy roads meet. By early Sunday morning, what began as a shooting call had become another grief-heavy investigation for police and another devastating loss for a family.

Talamantes asked community members not to dismiss anything they may have seen or heard.

“This incident remains under investigation, and I encourage anyone who may have information to contact the Sacramento Police Department at 916-808-5471. Even the smallest detail could help investigators and provide answers for his family,” she said.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Sacramento Police Department.

“My heart is with his family, friends, and all those impacted by this devastating loss,” Talamantes said.
