Vehicle break-in spirals into armed home invasion and police pursuit in Sacramento County

Published on

Sacramento, California – A Friday morning crime spree in La Riviera escalated quickly, moving from a reported vehicle burglary to a terrifying confrontation inside a home. Within less than 90 minutes, deputies were pursuing an armed man through neighborhood streets and into a large parking lot.

The chain of events ultimately led to an officer-involved shooting, though the information released so far does not explain how the shooting unfolded or provide details about injuries.

The first call reached the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center at approximately 9 a.m. on July 31, 2026. A caller reported that an adult man, described as a transient, was burglarizing a vehicle in the 9000 block of Folsom Boulevard.

When the vehicle’s owner tried to recover his belongings, the suspect allegedly produced a knife and threatened him. The man had already left by the time deputies arrived.

Deputies searched the surrounding area and found abandoned property believed to belong to the suspect. Investigators were able to use those items to determine his identity, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

At approximately 10:20 a.m., a second emergency call came from the 2600 block of Mackinaw Way. A homeowner had returned to his residence and discovered a man inside who matched the description of the earlier robbery suspect.

The situation was now far more dangerous. Authorities said the intruder had taken the homeowner’s handgun and threatened to kill him, repeatedly pointing the weapon at his head.

The homeowner managed to escape from the residence and call 911. The suspect then attempted to steal the homeowner’s vehicle but could not get away in it. Instead, he allegedly took a bicycle and fled.

Responding deputies spotted the suspect riding the stolen bicycle while holding the stolen firearm. They attempted to stop him, but he refused to comply and continued west from Grayling Way onto Barracuda Way.

The pursuit reached the end of a cul-de-sac, where a locked gate blocked the suspect’s path. He abandoned the bicycle, squeezed through a gap between two gates and ran into a large parking lot.

Deputies followed on foot as the armed pursuit continued. The encounter developed into an officer-involved shooting, bringing a fast-moving series of alleged crimes across La Riviera to a critical conclusion. Additional circumstances surrounding the shooting were not included in the initial account.
