Sacramento plans nearly two-week 8th Avenue closure for underground utility improvements

Published on

Sacramento, California – Oak Park residents are being asked to plan ahead as a scheduled road closure brings underground utility work to part of 8th Avenue in June.

The notice, shared through Sacramento Councilmember Caity Maple’s office, alerts neighbors that 8th Avenue will be closed from 45th Avenue to just west of the 8th Avenue entrance to William Lee College Prep. The closure is scheduled to begin Monday, June 8, and continue through Friday, June 19.

The work is tied to stormwater and sewer improvements near the school and in the surrounding neighborhood. During the closure, crews will reroute and upgrade the school’s stormwater line. They will also install new and improved combined sewer and stormwater infrastructure for the City of Sacramento.

For drivers, families, school staff, and nearby residents, the closure may mean a change in the usual route through the area. The affected stretch sits close to William Lee College Prep, making the timing and location especially important for anyone who normally uses 8th Avenue to reach the school or move through Oak Park.

Although road work can bring noise, cones, detours, and slower travel, the project is designed to improve infrastructure below the street. Stormwater and sewer systems are often out of sight, but they are a key part of keeping neighborhoods functioning during normal days and wet weather alike. The upgrades are expected to strengthen that system in the area.

City officials also emphasized one important point for nearby households: residential utility service will not be affected. That means residents should not experience service disruptions connected to the planned work.

The closure is expected to last nearly two weeks, from June 8 through June 19. During that period, residents are encouraged to watch for posted signs, allow extra travel time, and use alternate routes when moving near 8th Avenue and 45th Avenue.

For Oak Park, the work may be a temporary inconvenience, but it is also part of the quiet, necessary maintenance that supports daily life in the neighborhood. When the crews leave and the road reopens, the improvements beneath the surface will remain, helping serve the school, the City, and the surrounding community long after the closure ends.
