Sacramento, California – A major national swim meet is coming in August, but the competition cannot run on athletes alone. Behind every race will be volunteers keeping time, supporting swimmers and helping the five-day event stay on schedule.
For IHS seniors, the timing may be especially useful. The volunteer opportunity begins and ends before the new school year, giving students a chance to complete service hours for a senior project before classes resume.
Volunteers are needed for the 2026 U.S. Masters Swimming Long Course National Championships, scheduled for August 5 through August 9. Organizers are looking for people to fill several roles, including race timers, throughout the national meet.
No previous swim-meet experience is required. According to organizers, anyone who can push a button can serve as a timer. A short instructional video will be sent to volunteers before the event so they understand the process and know what to expect when they arrive.
Volunteer shifts will be arranged in three-hour blocks. Participants may sign up for one block or choose several shifts during the same day or across the week. That flexibility allows students, families and other community members to contribute without committing to the full five-day schedule.
Snacks, water and shaded areas will be provided for volunteers during their shifts. High school students completing service hours for a senior project will also receive a certificate documenting their participation.
The meet runs during the final stretch of summer, creating a limited window for IHS seniors who want to finish volunteer requirements before the new academic year begins. It also offers community members an opportunity to take part in a national sporting event from a close-up position beside the pool.
