Sacramento captain retires after rising through nearly every level of the department for more than 24 years

Published on

Sacramento, California – After nearly a quarter-century in uniform, Captain Brent Kaneyuki is closing one chapter of public service and stepping into retirement. His 24-year career with the Sacramento Police Department was shaped not by one assignment, but by a steady climb through patrol, training, outreach, recruiting and command.

The timeline tells part of the story. Kaneyuki joined the department as a police officer on March 12, 2002. He became a sergeant on March 23, 2013, was promoted to lieutenant on August 31, 2019, and reached the rank of captain on December 16, 2023.

Along the way, he worked across several parts of the organization. As an officer, Kaneyuki served as a Field Training Officer, worked with the Violent Crime Reduction Team and held an assignment as an Academy corporal. Those early roles placed him both in the field and in positions responsible for helping prepare other officers for the job.

After becoming a sergeant, he served in North Patrol, Field Training and South Problem Oriented Policing. He later returned to the Academy as a sergeant, continuing a connection to training that had already become an important part of his career.

Kaneyuki remained briefly at the Academy after his promotion to lieutenant before moving into patrol as a watch commander. He also led Outreach and Engagement and Recruiting, assignments that connected the department with both the public and future police employees.

As a captain, he worked in Personnel Services and most recently oversaw the Metro Division. He also served for several years as a member of the department’s Honor Guard.

His work brought repeated recognition. Kaneyuki received a Unit Citation in 2008 for his role with the Academy and a second Unit Citation in 2021 for his service with the Honor Guard. He was also named Employee of the Quarter four times, receiving the award in 2009, 2012, 2014 and 2019.

His professional development continued throughout his career. Kaneyuki attended POST Management, SLI and the Supervisor’s Core Course. He completed the POST Executive Development Course in 2022, attended POST Command College in 2023 and took part in the Senior Management Institute for Police in 2025.

The Sacramento Police Department thanked Kaneyuki for his continued dedication and commitment. His retirement marks the end of a career that stretched from officer to captain and touched nearly every level of the department. As he moves into the next phase of his life, colleagues are wishing him success in all future endeavors.
