Sacramento resumes regular street sweeping on public roads with curbs and gutters, urging residents to clear cars for cleaner storm drains

Sacramento, California – As the City of Sacramento moves out of leaf season and into its regular spring schedule, street sweepers are back in Sacramento neighborhoods. Starting in February and lasting until October, monthly street sweeping returns to public streets with curbs and gutters. This is a seasonal shift that many residents have come to expect.

The change happens after the leaf collection activities are over, which usually take up most of the winter months. Now, workers from the City’s Recycling and Solid Waste Division are working to remove loose dirt and small trash that builds up along roads. The goal is simple but important: keep trash out of storm drains and safeguard local waterways.

Not every street is included. Sweeping is limited to public roads with curbs and gutters. The program doesn’t cover private roadways or regions that don’t have these attributes. For those who are covered, schedules are tailored by address.

Residents and businesses may find out when their trash will be picked up by looking at their collection calendar or by downloading the free SacRecycle app. The calendar shows all of the scheduled sweeps for the year, and it applies to both homes and businesses. In buildings with more than one household, the schedule is based on the unit that is identified as the utility billing address.

City authorities are asking drivers to assist personnel do their jobs well. When cars park on both sides of a roadway, sweepers can’t always get to the curb, where trash builds up the most. People can sign up for notifications emailed the day before service through the SacRecycle app.

Jesa David, spokesperson for the Recycling and Solid Waste Division, advised residents to use the alert system so that cars can be moved ahead of time. She said that the best outcomes come from a clean curb.

“We encourage customers to use the free SacReycle app to set up an alert to move their car for the best results on their street,” said David. “Ideally, the street will be clear of vehicles during sweeping service.”

There are signs along each block in neighborhoods where there are temporary parking restrictions to make room for sweeping and other activities. Customers who have signed up for text or email notifications will be told if a scheduled route can’t be completed because of problems like roadblocks. Then, usually within the same week, a make-up date is added to the calendar.

Sweepers can pick up small trash, but they can’t pick up big trash or trash that has been dumped unlawfully. If you see bulky waste, please call the City’s Customer Service line at 3-1-1 or ask for a bulky waste pickup.

The division takes care of more than 150,000 miles of public right-of-way per year. The return of sweepers as spring approaches is more than just a regular service. It is part of a continuous effort to keep Sacramento’s streets cleaner and its stormwater system working as it should.
