Grassroots photography movement grows as Sacramento prepares for another annual showcase in April

Published on

Sacramento, California – Photography Month Sacramento will return in April 2026 bringing a month-long celebration of photography back to the area. Viewpoint Photographic Art Center, a nonprofit group in Midtown Sacramento, organizes the event every year. It keeps getting bigger as cultural organizations, businesses, teachers, and private photographers work together.

Photography Month Sacramento started in 2018 as a grassroots effort to show off all kinds of photography. The program doesn’t depend on one organizer or venue. Instead, it asks partner organizations to plan and run their own photography-related events throughout the month. This unified approach has helped create a calendar of events that includes a wide spectrum of artistic styles and voices.

Photography Month Sacramento has a wide range of exhibits, artist receptions, photo meet-ups, workshops, lectures, field trips, and hands-on learning opportunities every year. Galleries, museums, libraries, retail outlets, hotels, and educational institutions all take part. This creates a platform that connects photographers with the community and encourages everyone to become involved with visual storytelling.

Many groups from all over the area have already said they will take part in 2026. The California Museum, the Crocker Art Museum, Casa de Español, the Gold Country Photo Society, the Leland Stanford Mansion State Historic Park, the Nevada County Camera Club, the Open Call Exhibit: Spring Light, the Old Sugar Mill, Sierra College in Rocklin, the Viewpoint Photographic Art Center, and Yolo Arts’ Gallery 625 are some of the early participants.

Anyone can join and take part. Nonprofit and for-profit businesses, museums, and organizations can join at no cost. The application makes it easy to show off existing photographic programming, add new visual features, conduct special events, or introduce new concepts still in development. The idea is to get photography enthusiasts involved while also reaching new people in the area.

Photographers of all skill levels are also invited during Photography Month Sacramento. In April 2026, both experts and amateurs are encouraged to demonstrate their work, put on collaborative events, or work with local cafes and restaurants to create displays.
