Man dies after late-morning stabbing along Sacramento’s Del Paso Boulevard on June 3

Sacramento, California – Sacramento police are investigating a deadly stabbing that unfolded late Wednesday morning along Del Paso Boulevard, leaving one man dead and another man in custody.

According to the Sacramento Police Department, officers were called to the 900 block of Del Paso Boulevard on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, just before 11:00 a.m., after reports came in about a stabbing. When officers arrived, they found an adult male victim who had suffered at least one stab wound.

The first moments at the scene were urgent. Officers began providing emergency medical aid while waiting for Fire personnel to arrive. The victim was then taken to an area hospital, but despite the response, he later died from his injuries.

Police said an adult male suspect was detained at the scene. He was later identified as 46-year-old James Dougherty of Citrus Heights. Dougherty was arrested and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on homicide-related charges.

Because of the seriousness of the incident, Homicide Detectives and Crime Scene Investigators were called in to take over the case. Investigators processed the scene, gathered evidence, and spoke with witnesses as they worked to piece together what happened before officers arrived.

The Sacramento Police Department said the circumstances surrounding the stabbing remain under investigation. Officials have not released further details about what may have led to the violence.

The name of the deceased has not yet been released. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will identify the victim after next-of-kin have been notified.

Police are now asking anyone with information about the case to come forward. Witnesses can contact the Sacramento Police Department dispatch center at (916) 808-5471. Tips can also be submitted to Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers at (916) 443-HELP (4357).

Callers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000. Anonymous tips may also be sent through the free “P3 Tips” smartphone app.

As the investigation continues, the case has added another layer of concern to a busy Sacramento corridor where police, detectives, and crime scene personnel spent part of Wednesday working to secure answers after a deadly act of violence.
