Sacramento County seeks to solve the affordable housing crisis with unique initiative

Published on

Sacramento, California – Sacramento County recently announced the availability of free plans for additional dwelling units (ADUs) in its unincorporated areas, therefore greatly boosting efforts at affordable housing. Made possible by a state grant from the Department of Housing and Community Development, this project seeks to simplify the building of independent living facilities.

Built on the same grounds as a current home, ADUs—often known as granny flats or in-law units—are small dwelling facilities. These buildings essentially constitute a completely working residential unit since they have all the conveniences of sleeping, cooking, and sanitation.

To serve a range of family sizes and needs, the county has released several “shelf-ready” ADU designs. Plans that are now on offer range in size from 460 square feet for a studio and one-bedroom apartment to 870 and 1,000 square foot two-bedroom apartment alternatives and bigger three-bedroom homes covering 1,184 square feet. Apart from following the 2022 Residential Building Code, these designs are pre-approved by the Building Permits and Inspection Division of the county, therefore guaranteeing a faster and less expensive permitting process.

The community development director of Sacramento County, Troy Givans, noted the wider advantages of these ADUs since they will help the development of lively, well-designed neighborhoods all over the county. He further emphasized the county’s commitment to solve housing shortages and support community development.

Those who want to build an ADU on their land must provide a site plan showing the proposed unit location. Changes to the pre-approved blueprints are not allowed, thereby ensuring that the units satisfy all safety and design criteria established by the county.

This action taken by Sacramento County is projected to provide cheap housing for its citizens, consequently lowering the financial load on both renters and new homeowners and enabling multi-generational living quarters. Pre-approved, free ADU plans provide a breakthrough in enabling independent, affordable housing for more members of the society.
