Sacramento families encouraged to trade screens for parks during June wellness celebration this coming weekend

Published on

Sacramento County, California – Sacramento County is giving families a reason to trade screens for sunshine on Saturday, June 14, as Family Health & Fitness Day brings a full slate of outdoor activities to parks across the region.

The celebration, organized through Sacramento County Regional Parks and its community partners, is built around a simple idea: parks are not just places to visit, but places where families can move, relax, connect and build healthier habits together.

The day will feature free and family-friendly events spread throughout the regional park system, with activities designed for different ages, energy levels and interests.

Some residents may choose a more active start with a 5K at the Cosumnes River Preserve, while others may prefer a Zumba class at Gibson Ranch Regional Park, guided walks, outdoor games, health resources or a slower morning spent exploring nature with children. Sacramento County said the effort is meant to support physical activity, wellness and quality family time in public spaces.

Regional Parks Director Liz Bellas said the day is about encouraging people to “make movement a part of everyday life,” while also giving families a chance to discover the parks around them. Her message fits the wider purpose of Family Health & Fitness Day, which is observed nationally on the second Saturday in June and highlights the role parks and recreation play in community health.

Beyond the County-led programming, local organizations are helping turn the day into a broader community celebration. In the Rio Linda and Elverta area, planned activities include a goat petting zoo, group exercise, a Zumba class, and a gardening question-and-answer session at Gibson Ranch Regional Park. Cherry Island Golf Course and Cherry Island Sports Complex are also expected to host family activities such as bounce houses, face painting, kids’ golf introductions and dodgeball.

The schedule also stretches into the afternoon and evening in some locations. The Night of the Revving Dead Car Show at the Dry Creek Ranch House is listed from noon to 8 p.m., with free admission for spectators and a $5 parking fee per vehicle. Other activities may require advance registration, so residents are encouraged to check details before heading out.

The full event list and registration information are available through the Sacramento County Regional Parks website. For families looking for an easy way to begin summer with fresh air, movement and a little local adventure, June 14 offers a ready-made path into the parks.
