Sacramento, California – A fatal officer-involved shooting early Friday in Sacramento is now under investigation, after California Highway Patrol officers reported exchanging gunfire with a suspect inside city limits.

According to preliminary information released by the Sacramento Police Department, the incident began around 12:03 a.m. on March 27, 2026, when the department’s communications center received an emergency assistance call from CHP. Authorities said CHP officers advised that they had been involved in a shooting and needed immediate support.

Sacramento police officers who were already nearby responded within moments and found the scene still unfolding. Officers then assisted in providing medical aid to the suspect while waiting for firefighters and paramedics from the Sacramento Fire Department to arrive. Despite those efforts, the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene by fire personnel.

Investigators said a firearm was found at the location and taken into evidence.

Because the shooting happened within Sacramento city limits, the Sacramento Police Department has taken the lead in the investigation. Homicide detectives, crime scene investigators, and CHP personnel all responded to begin processing the scene and reviewing the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office is also monitoring the case, providing oversight as investigators work to establish a clearer timeline of what happened and the events that led to the gunfire.

Officials stressed that the case remains active and that the information released so far is only a summary of what is known at this stage. As with many early-stage investigations, details may shift as detectives gather more evidence, interview witnesses, and complete forensic review.

The identity of the person who died has not yet been released. Authorities said that information will come from the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office after relatives have been notified.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information that could help investigators is being asked to contact the Sacramento Police Department dispatch center at (916) 808-5471. Tips can also be shared anonymously through Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers at (916) 443-HELP (4357) or through the P3 Tips app. Officials said anonymous tipsters may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
