Sacramento afternoon turns deadly as Washington Avenue shooting leads to homicide investigation and multi-neighborhood manhunt ending in arrest

Published on

Sacramento, California – A quiet Thursday afternoon in Sacramento was abruptly shattered on March 12, 2026, when gunfire sent police rushing to the 4000 block of Washington Avenue just after 1:15 p.m. What began as an emergency call quickly unfolded into a complex and far-reaching investigation that would stretch across multiple neighborhoods and demand a coordinated law enforcement response.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found an adult man suffering from at least one gunshot wound. Despite immediate efforts to save him, including lifesaving measures performed at the scene, the victim was pronounced dead by responding fire personnel. The area, typically marked by the steady rhythm of daily life, became the focus of an intense police presence as investigators worked to piece together what had happened.

In the early stages of the response, officers gathered critical information from the scene, including details pointing to a vehicle believed to be connected to the shooting. That lead would soon prove pivotal. Detectives from the department’s Homicide Unit, alongside Crime Scene Investigators, took over the case, carefully documenting evidence and speaking with witnesses in an effort to reconstruct the sequence of events.

Not long after the initial incident, officers were dispatched to a separate weapons-related call on Jeffrey Avenue. The connection became clear almost immediately—the vehicle described matched the one linked to the Washington Avenue homicide. Officers located the vehicle, and what followed was a pursuit that carried the investigation into yet another part of the city.

The chase came to an end in the 3300 block of 12th Avenue, but the situation remained tense. Authorities reported that the suspect inside the vehicle refused to cooperate, prompting a prolonged standoff. What followed was a coordinated effort involving multiple specialized units, including patrol officers, a SWAT team, an Unmanned Aerial System unit, Crisis Negotiators, and a Canine team. Over time, through persistence and tactical coordination, officers were able to bring the situation under control.

The suspect was ultimately taken into custody and transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. He remained there for several days before being released on March 17. Authorities later identified him as 47-year-old Willie King of Sacramento. Following his release from medical care, he was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on charges connected to the incident.

As the investigation continues, officials have not yet released the identity of the victim, noting that the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will do so once next-of-kin notifications have been completed.

Police are urging anyone who may have witnessed the events or has information related to the case to come forward. Individuals can contact the Sacramento Police Department’s dispatch center or reach out anonymously through Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers. Tips submitted may qualify for a reward, and authorities emphasize that even small details could play a meaningful role in advancing the investigation.
