Sacramento, California – A fatal officer-involved shooting early Friday in Sacramento is now under investigation, after California Highway Patrol officers reported exchanging gunfire with a suspect inside city limits.
According to preliminary information released by the Sacramento Police Department, the incident began around 12:03 a.m. on March 27, 2026, when the department’s communications center received an emergency assistance call from CHP. Authorities said CHP officers advised that they had been involved in a shooting and needed immediate support.
Sacramento police officers who were already nearby responded within moments and found the scene still unfolding. Despite those efforts, the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene by fire personnel.
Investigators said a firearm was found at the location and taken into evidence.

Homicide detectives, crime scene investigators, and CHP personnel all responded to begin processing the scene and reviewing the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office is also monitoring the case, providing oversight as investigators work to establish a clearer timeline of what happened and the events that led to the gunfire.
