Sacramento, California – Transit Equity Day will be observed on Wednesday, February 4, 2026. It will be an opportunity to reflect on fairness in public transportation while honoring the lasting influence of civil rights leader Rosa Parks.
The day is all about her brave act of resistance in 1955, when she refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus. This act became an influential catalyst for change and assisted the battle for equal treatment in public spaces.
SacRT will honor Parks by putting up signs on its buses with messages about her legacy. There will be a special “Reserved for Rosa Parks” sign on a front seat on every bus. The sign is a clear reminder of how important public transportation was to the civil rights struggle and how important it is for transit agencies to keep working to make sure all customers are treated fairly and included.

The purpose of the remembrance is not only to remember the past, but also to connect what happened then to what is happening now. Transit Equity Day emphasizes how important it is to have transportation that is easy to use, cheap, and equitable. It also recognizes that reliable transit continues to be important for opportunity, mobility, and community connection.
In recognition of the day, SacRT will also offer fare-free fixed-route bus service throughout Wednesday, February 4, 2026. When a rider gets on the bus, they can show a Free Ride flyer, either on their phone or as a printed copy, to get on without paying. The offer is only good for bus service for the day and is meant to get more people to use public transportation by making it easier to do so.
Transit Equity Day is a day to remember Rosa Parks and take action. It shows how the ideas she stood for still affect public transit and help make communities more welcoming.
