Blue Line travel in Sacramento shifts through April as crews prepare system for new low floor trains

Published on

Sacramento, California – April is unfolding as a month of adjustments for riders along Sacramento’s Blue Line, where familiar routines are being reshaped by a sweeping infrastructure effort that stretches across much of the corridor. The Sacramento Regional Transit District, or SacRT, has begun a series of phased disruptions tied to its Light Rail Modernization Project, an undertaking described by the agency as the largest in its 53-year history.

At the heart of the work is a simple but transformative change: raising station platforms by roughly eight inches. That shift, though modest in measurement, is essential for the system’s future. It will allow the introduction of new low-floor light rail vehicles, designed to improve accessibility, speed up boarding, and create a more reliable ride.

The upgrades are already visible at several stations, including Roseville Road, Swanston, Globe, and Alkali Flat/La Valentina, as well as along the southern extension to Cosumnes River College. Many more stops, 15 in total between Watt/I-80 and Meadowview, plus the downtown 8th & O station, are now in line for similar changes.

To make that progress possible, SacRT has temporarily replaced portions of train service with bus bridges, shuttle buses that carry passengers between affected stations while construction crews take over the tracks. These shuttles typically arrive every 20 to 30 minutes, creating a steady, if slower, alternative to rail service. Outside of the impacted segments, trains continue to run, though some stations are closed entirely or bypassed without stopping.

The first phase of these changes began April 1, when a bus bridge was introduced between Watt/I-80 and Roseville Road. During this period, both Watt/I-80 and Watt/I-80 West stations are closed to boarding, pushing riders to adjust their usual entry points. Trains continue to operate normally south of Roseville Road toward Cosumnes River College, preserving a partial sense of continuity.

By mid-month, the focus shifts. From April 14 through April 17, disruptions move southward between Roseville Road and Swanston. Marconi/Arcade Station, a key stop for many commuters, is temporarily closed, and trains pass through without stopping. That pattern repeats again from April 20 to April 24, reinforcing the sense that April’s travel plans require careful attention and flexibility.

Weekends bring their own variations. On April 18 and 19, and again on April 25 and 26, bus bridges extend further, connecting Roseville Road to Alkali Flat/La Valentina. Additional stations, including Arden/Del Paso during the later weekend phase, close for boarding. Each of these windows ends by late Sunday afternoon, restoring a more typical service pattern, at least briefly, before the next round of work resumes.

While northern segments see platform construction, a separate issue is unfolding in the south. Beginning April 3, emergency substation repairs between City College and Florin introduce daily disruptions starting at 9 a.m. Trains run normally in the early morning hours, but once repairs begin, passengers must rely on a bus bridge linking stations such as City College, Fruitridge, 47th Avenue, and Florin. This project operates independently from the northern upgrades, creating a layered set of changes across the entire Blue Line.

SacRT has emphasized that schedules may shift due to weather or other unforeseen factors, urging riders to stay informed before heading out. The agency directs passengers to its official pages, https://www.sacrt.com/blueline for construction updates and https://www.sacrt.com/bluelinerepairs for repair information, as well as its alerts page at https://www.sacrt.com/alerts. Real-time updates are also available through the Alert SacRT app, and customer service can be reached at 916-321-BUSS (2877).

For riders, the message is clear: plan ahead and allow extra time. The rhythm of daily travel may feel disrupted, but the changes are part of a broader vision. The Blue Line, which first opened in 1987, is showing its age, and these upgrades mark a significant step toward modernizing the system for the decades ahead.

SacRT has acknowledged the inconvenience while pointing toward long-term gains. The promise of smoother boarding, improved accessibility, and a more efficient network sits on the other side of this temporary disruption. For now, buses fill the gaps where trains pause, and the system continues to move, just on a slightly different track.
