Broadway in Oak Park takes center stage as Sacramento invites residents to review corridor upgrades

Published on

Sacramento, California – Neighbors in Oak Park will soon have a chance to weigh in on plans that could reshape one of the area’s busiest corridors, as the city prepares to host a public workshop focused on safety upgrades along Broadway.

The community meeting is scheduled for April 9 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at American Legion High School, located at 3801 Broadway. City officials say the event is designed to give residents, commuters and other community members a closer look at two major efforts now moving forward in the area: the Envision Broadway in Oak Park Complete Street Project and the Broadway Vision Zero project.

Together, the two initiatives are centered on one broad goal — making Broadway safer, calmer and more functional for everyone who uses it. That includes people on foot, cyclists, transit riders and drivers traveling through Oak Park each day. Rather than treating the corridor as a route built mainly for cars, the projects aim to rethink how the street works block by block and how it can better serve the surrounding neighborhood.

City staff say public feedback will play an important role before final decisions are made.

“These projects are about making Broadway safer and more accessible for everyone who lives, works and travels through Oak Park,” said Stephanie Saiz, assistant engineer with the City’s Department of Public Works. “Community input is critical to ensuring the improvements reflect the needs and priorities of the neighborhood.”

The Complete Street portion of the effort focuses on Broadway between Franklin Boulevard and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Proposed changes in that section include reducing the number of travel lanes, adding pedestrian refuge areas and creating buffered bike lanes. Plans also call for sidewalk and streetscape improvements, parking where space allows and better connections to Route 51 bus stops.

Farther south and east, the Broadway Vision Zero project targets the stretch from Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to Stockton Boulevard. That proposal also centers on slowing traffic and lowering the risk of serious crashes. Current concepts include cutting vehicle lanes from four to two, adding a center turn lane and building separated bike lanes with a striped buffer. The project would also improve pedestrian crossings and expand accessibility along the corridor.

For residents who have watched Broadway handle fast-moving traffic for years, the workshop offers a direct opening to respond to those ideas before designs are finalized. Organizers say attendees will be able to review the proposed upgrades, hear project updates and share thoughts that may influence what the finished corridor looks like.

The meeting is expected to bring both projects into one room, giving the neighborhood a fuller picture of how safety improvements could unfold across a long section of Broadway. In practical terms, that means people will be able to consider not just isolated changes, but how the corridor could function as a connected route with safer crossings, more predictable traffic movement and stronger options for biking, walking and transit access.

The city is also encouraging people to stay involved beyond the workshop itself. Community members can learn more and sign up for updates through the city’s website, including the Broadway Vision Zero webpage and the Envision Broadway in Oak Park Complete Street Project webpage. As the city moves deeper into planning, the upcoming workshop marks a key moment for Oak Park residents to speak up about what safety, access and everyday movement along Broadway should look like in the years ahead.
