Homicide detectives take over investigation after deadly shooting reported in north Sacramento Friday night

Sacramento, California – A gunshot in North Sacramento late at night has left one man dead with an active homicide investigation underway.

Just before 9 p.m. on Friday, February 20, 2026, officers from the Sacramento Police Department were sent to the 1500 block of West El Camino Avenue following reports of gunfire. When the police arrived, they saw that an adult man had been shot at least once.

The police started giving emergency medical help right away, the Sacramento Police Department said in a release. Firefighters quickly got there to help, and the victim was taken to a local hospital. Even though they tried to help him, he died from his injuries later.

Because of how serious the situation was, homicide detectives and crime scene investigators took charge of the case. Authorities said that investigators searched the area for evidence and talked to potential witnesses while they tried to figure out what happened. The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation.

Police have not yet revealed any information about the suspects.

The identity of the deceased will be made public by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office once next of kin have been notified.

Police said that those who give information through Crime Stoppers may be able to get a reward of up to $1,000.

While detectives continue their investigation, authorities are requesting the public for help in helping bring clarity to the events that unfolded Friday night along West El Camino Avenue.
