Sacramento cleanup event on June 6 makes room for residents to unload difficult household waste at no charge

Published on

Sacramento, California – A Saturday morning cleanup opportunity is coming to Sacramento for residents who have been holding on to old furniture, unwanted electronics, yard debris or other household items that no longer belong in the garage or backyard.

The City of Sacramento, working with Waste Management, will hold a free Dump Day on Saturday, June 6, 2026, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Sacramento Recycling and Transfer Station, 8491 Fruitridge Road. Vehicles must enter from 84th Street, where signs will guide participants into the disposal area.

The event is open only to people who live within Sacramento city limits. Residents must bring identification and a utility bill showing a City of Sacramento address. Addresses will be checked at the site before free disposal is allowed. People who live outside city limits, including residents of Sacramento County, will be charged a flat disposal fee.

Organizers are also asking participants to arrive prepared for the physical side of the drop-off. Residents must be able to unload their own vehicles. Standard pickup trucks and SUVs are permitted, but trailers, panel trucks, U-Haul vehicles and commercial trucks will not be allowed.

For many households, the event may provide a simple way to clear out bulky items that are difficult to manage through ordinary disposal. Accepted materials, within event limits, include general household garbage and waste such as metal, plastic, fiberglass, fabric, glass, untreated wood and landscape trimmings.

A limited number of larger items can also be brought in. Residents may dispose of up to four tires and four rims per vehicle, but tires must first be separated from rims. Up to four mattresses, box springs or futon mattresses per vehicle will be accepted, provided they are detached from any frame or base.

Certain household appliances will be taken as well, including washers, dryers and dishwashers, as long as they do not contain freon or compressed gas. Electronics such as televisions, computer monitors and accessories, VCRs, CD or DVD players, stereo equipment and microwaves are also among the items eligible for drop-off.

Household hazardous waste will be accepted separately once residents arrive at the site. That category includes paint, batteries, oils, acids, aerosol cans, household chemicals, corrosive materials and hazardous bases. Keeping those materials separate from regular garbage helps ensure they are handled appropriately during the collection process.

Not everything can go into the Dump Day stream. Treated wood waste will not be accepted, nor will concrete, dirt, rocks, asphalt, sand, brick or construction materials. The city will also reject asbestos of any type, compressed gas, refrigerators, air conditioners and other appliances containing freon or compressed gas. Business and commercial waste is excluded from the event.

The free disposal day is intended to help Sacramento residents remove large household items properly while reducing the chance that unwanted material ends up where it does not belong. When possible, items collected during the event will be recycled or diverted from landfill disposal.

Residents seeking event details and disposal guidance can review the City of Sacramento’s Free Dump Day information and the broader Recycling and Solid Waste resources before loading their vehicles.
