Sacramento, California – Sacramento County is opening a temporary place for people to escape the heat as hotter weather moves into the area.
Working with First Step Communities, the Sacramento County Department of Homeless Services and Housing will activate hot weather surge capacity at the North A Shelter, located at 1400 North A Street. The respite site will operate from Wednesday, June 10, through Saturday, June 13, each day from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m.
County officials said the decision was made based on forecasts from the National Weather Service. The activation is designed to give people a safe and cool indoor space during the warmest part of the day, especially those who may not have easy access to shelter, air conditioning or basic services.
The site is not operating around the clock. Sacramento County stressed that this is not a 24-hour activation, so anyone planning to go should pay close attention to the listed hours.
People who arrive at the respite center can expect more than just a break from the sun. The location will offer a cool place to rest, restrooms, a meal and the ability to charge electronic devices. Light case management will also be available for those who need basic support or help connecting with services.
Before traveling to the North A Shelter, interested participants are asked to call 2-1-1 to check whether space is available. Capacity may change during the activation period, and calling ahead can help people avoid making a trip if the site is already full.
The County said it will provide another notification if the hot weather respite activation is extended beyond Saturday, June 13.
