Sacramento County inmate dies after deputies find him unresponsive in medical cell

Sacramento, California – A routine predawn check inside Sacramento County’s largest correctional facility turned into an emergency Tuesday when deputies found a man unresponsive in a medical housing cell.

Despite immediate CPR and continued efforts by correctional health staff and firefighters, the inmate could not be revived.

The incident occurred at approximately 4 a.m. on July 14, 2026, inside the Medical Housing Unit at the Rio Cosumnes Correctional Center. According to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, deputies requested help from Adult Correctional Health and called for an immediate Fire Department response after discovering the inmate.

Deputies began performing CPR while emergency personnel were on the way. Life-saving measures continued until firefighters arrived, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The inmate had been placed in the Medical Housing Unit because of ongoing health issues. He was alone in a cell equipped with a camera that allowed Adult Correctional Health personnel to monitor him.

Homicide detectives and Crime Scene Investigators responded to the correctional center following the death. Investigators said they do not suspect foul play, although the circumstances will remain under review as the Sheriff’s Office completes its investigation.

The man had been held in custody since April 10, 2024. At the time of his death, he was awaiting proceedings connected to pending charges of robbery, criminal threats, brandishing a weapon and petty theft.

He had also been placed on a hold by the State Hospital while the courts worked to determine whether he was competent to stand trial in his outstanding cases. No additional details were released about his medical condition or the events immediately before deputies entered the cell.

The Sheriff’s Office said the death will be investigated under department procedures and applicable state laws. In-custody deaths generally involve separate reviews of the medical response, evidence from the scene and the inmate’s housing and supervision records.

The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will determine the official cause and manner of death. The office will also release the inmate’s identity according to its established notification protocols, typically after relatives have been informed.

Until the coroner completes that process, the reason the inmate became unresponsive remains officially undetermined.
