Sacramento, California – A firearm briefly visible near the Old Sacramento boardwalk set off a fast-moving police response on June 27. Officers did not have to rely only on radio descriptions or search a crowded area blindly.
A live camera feed gave Sacramento police a clearer view, helping several specialized teams locate the group, organize their approach and detain those involved without the situation escalating.
According to the Sacramento Police Department, officers were called to the Old Sacramento area after someone within a group was seen displaying a firearm. The observation raised immediate concerns in one of the city’s busiest entertainment and visitor districts, where crowds can make armed encounters especially difficult to manage.
Investigators said officers used footage from the department’s Public Safety Camera Network to follow the developing situation. Patrol officers worked alongside members of SPD’s Entertainment Team and K9 officers to coordinate a contact team.
The combined response allowed police to approach the individuals and safely detain them. During the investigation, officers recovered the firearm that had previously been observed on camera.
Police identified the suspect as 27-year-old Anuxath Chompoosang of Sacramento. He was arrested on firearm-related charges. SPD did not provide additional details about the specific charges, the type of firearm recovered or what happened before the weapon was displayed.
The incident highlights the role live public safety cameras can play during calls involving weapons. Rather than depending entirely on witness accounts after officers arrived, the camera network gave responding teams real-time information that helped them identify the person connected to the firearm and plan a coordinated response.
Old Sacramento regularly draws residents, tourists and nightlife crowds to its boardwalk, restaurants, shops and entertainment venues. That activity can also create challenges for officers trying to separate individuals, track movements and respond quickly when a possible weapon is reported.
SPD praised the officers and personnel who took part in the operation, stating: “Outstanding work by everyone involved in safely resolving this incident and helping keep our community safe.”
No injuries were reported in the information released by police. The department also did not indicate whether anyone else in the group was arrested or cited.
