Sacramento police arrest 21-year-old suspect after fatal stabbing on 5th Avenue

Sacramento, California – A quiet stretch of 5th Avenue became the center of a homicide investigation early Tuesday after Sacramento police found a man suffering from at least one stab wound.

The response began just before 12:30 a.m. on July 14, when officers were called to the 3500 block following reports of an assault involving a weapon. Despite efforts to save him, the victim died at the scene.

Sacramento Police Department officers detained an adult male suspect at the location. Police later identified him as 21-year-old Sacramento resident Maximus Morgan.

According to the department, because of the fatal outcome and the circumstances surrounding the incident, homicide detectives and crime scene investigators were called in to take control of the case. Investigators processed the area, gathered evidence and spoke with witnesses as they worked to determine what led to the stabbing.

Morgan was arrested and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on homicide-related charges. Police have not released additional details about the events preceding the assault, the relationship between the suspect and victim, or what investigators believe may have prompted the confrontation.

The case remains under investigation, leaving several key questions unanswered. Authorities have not said whether any other people were involved or whether investigators recovered a weapon at the scene.

The name of the man who died has also not been made public. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office is expected to release his identity after officials notify his next of kin.

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or has information that may help detectives to contact the Sacramento Police Department’s dispatch center at (916) 808-5471. Tips may also be provided to Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers at (916) 443-HELP, or (916) 443-4357.

Callers may remain anonymous and could qualify for a reward of up to $1,000. Information can also be submitted anonymously through the free P3 Tips smartphone application.

As detectives continue reviewing evidence and witness accounts, the overnight death adds another active homicide investigation to the department’s workload, and leaves a family awaiting formal notification and answers about what happened on 5th Avenue.
