Sacramento takes measures to protect residents from summer heat with cooling centers

Published on

Sacramento, California – As the warmer months approach, Sacramento is getting ready to open its cooling centers for extreme heat periods. These centers include the City’s Outreach and Engagement Center at 3615 Auburn Blvd., previously used during winter, and various community centers across the city.

“The City’s goal is to protect the health and safety of all Sacramentans by providing a comfortable place for residents to seek respite and safety from the elements during extreme weather events,” said Benjamin Worrall, social services manager of the Department of Community Response.

The Outreach and Engagement Center (OEC) plays a crucial role in providing refuge and daytime services, especially for those without homes, during both the hot summer and cold winter. Following new guidelines set by the City Council in 2023, these cooling centers will be opened when the National Weather Service announces an excessive heat watch, warning, or advisory. This happens when temperatures are expected to hit 100 degrees or above for at least two consecutive days, with nighttime temperatures staying above 75 degrees.

The guidelines for activating these centers are different from those in the State and County’s Severe Weather Guidance Plan, which the City’s Office of Emergency Management monitors. The Department of Community Response handles opening these centers according to city rules.

On days when temperatures are below the thresholds for opening respite centers, places like community centers and public libraries still provide a cool haven as part of their usual services. According to Worrall, these centers typically offer water, snacks, restrooms, and a space for resting and charging phones. They also allow the City of Sacramento to identify and address other needs of the individuals, connecting them to necessary services.

Other towns nearby might also have cooling locations available. The operation times for these places can differ. For more information, it’s advised to call 2-1-1 or visit the website at 211sacramento.org/211.
