Sacramento, California – In Sacramento’s Avondale community, a limited-time energy-saving effort is giving eligible residents a chance to make their homes safer, more comfortable and less expensive to power.
SMUD’s Neighborhood Program is currently working in Avondale to help income-eligible customers receive free home energy-efficiency upgrades. The opportunity is open to Avondale residents who are enrolled in SMUD’s Energy Assistance Program Rate, also known as EAPR. For families already watching monthly bills closely, the program offers a practical way to improve a home without adding another cost.
The first step is simple: residents must verify that they qualify through EAPR. More information about income eligibility is available at smud.org/LowIncome. After that, residents can schedule a free home energy assessment with a SMUD Energy Specialist, who will review the home and determine which upgrades may be available.
SMUD says the upgrades are designed to improve comfort, safety and energy efficiency while helping customers reduce energy costs. Sr. Energy Specialist Kevin is among the SMUD team members helping customers find ways to save every month through the neighborhood effort.
The type of help available depends on the home and whether the resident rents or owns. Renters living in houses may qualify for items such as a programmable thermostat, advanced power strip, LED light bulbs, insulation and minor efficiency upgrades. Homeowners may be eligible for broader improvements, including some heating and cooling repairs or replacements, energy-efficiency upgrades, or support with switching from gas to electric appliances.
The program also highlights a larger goal: helping households use energy more efficiently while supporting a cleaner future. For many residents, even small improvements can make a home feel different, especially during hot Sacramento days when cooling costs can climb quickly.
Avondale residents who believe they may qualify are encouraged to act while the program is available. To begin, they can confirm their EAPR status, then schedule a free assessment through SMUD’s Energy Saver Bundles page at smud.org/EnergySaverBundles.
