Sacramento, California – A 1-year-old girl died after a vehicle struck her and an adult man on Sacramento’s 21st Avenue on Sunday afternoon. Police said officers detained the driver as he attempted to leave the scene.
The man survived with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. The driver, identified as 50-year-old Miguel Guzman of Sacramento, was later arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and booked on felony DUI and hit-and-run charges.
In a release detailing the incident, the Sacramento Police Department said patrol officers responded to the 6700 block of 21st Avenue just before 4:45 p.m. on November 1, 2026. Reports had described a collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian.
When officers arrived, they found that two pedestrians had been involved: the adult man and the young child. Both were taken to an area hospital for treatment. Despite lifesaving efforts, the girl died from her injuries.
The department said officers detained Guzman at the scene while he was attempting to leave. Following the investigation, he was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on charges related to felony DUI causing great bodily injury and felony hit-and-run. Those charges are allegations.
Detectives from the department’s Major Collision Investigation Unit took over the investigation, with Crime Scene Investigators also responding. Their work included processing the collision scene, canvassing the surrounding area and interviewing witnesses.
The release did not describe what led up to the collision or identify the adult pedestrian. It also did not state whether the man and the child were related.
The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will release the girl’s identity after her next of kin have been notified, according to the department.
