Officer involved shooting on Monday in South Sacramento under active multi agency investigation

Sacramento, California – An officer-involved shooting in South Sacramento on the evening of February 16, 2026, is under active investigation after deputies encountered a vehicle believed to be connected to a shooting reported the previous day.

According to Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, the incident unfolded around 7:30 p.m. when deputies from the Central Patrol Division spotted the suspected vehicle traveling south along Elk Grove Florin Road.

Two deputies initiated a traffic stop near the intersection of Tiogawoods Drive and Elk Grove Florin Road. During that stop, gunfire was exchanged, and both deputies discharged their weapons, firing a combined total of five rounds.

An adult male identified as the suspect was struck by gunfire an undetermined number of times. Neither deputy was injured in the confrontation. Deputies at the scene immediately rendered medical assistance while waiting for Sacramento Metro Fire personnel to arrive.

The suspect was then transported to a nearby hospital, where he remains hospitalized. Investigators also recovered a handgun at the location of the shooting.

The circumstances surrounding the encounter are now being reviewed through multiple investigative channels. The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau and the department’s Professional Standards Division are conducting the primary investigation, consistent with standard procedure for officer-involved shootings within the agency’s jurisdiction.

In addition, the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office will carry out an independent review of the incident.

As the investigation continues, the deputies involved have been placed on administrative leave in accordance with departmental policy.

Authorities have not released further details, and the review process is expected to determine the sequence of events leading up to the shooting.
