Community workshop to shape safer bike and pedestrian corridor along H Street in Sacramento

Published on

Sacramento, California – An upcoming public session will give community members a chance to help determine the future of a major transportation corridor in Sacramento. The focus will be on the projected H Street Bikeway connection to Sacramento Valley Station.

The meeting will take place on Thursday, February 26, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in Room 1119 at Sacramento City Hall, which is at 915 I Street. Residents, cyclists, nearby businesses, and anyone else who cares about getting around in the neighborhood are welcome to come and express their opinions as the project moves forward.

City planners want to build a two-way, physically segregated bike lane along the south side of H Street between 5th and 10th streets. The goal of the renovation is to make the path safer and calmer for people who walk or ride bikes, as well as to strengthen the link between downtown, nearby communities, and the Sacramento Valley Station transit hub. Officials see this endeavor as part of a larger push to make safer, low-stress ways to get around the city on foot or by bike.

During the workshop, people will be able to look over design proposals, talk about potential enhancements to the corridor, and talk about their top concerns for safety, accessibility, walking, and biking. The feedback from the session will be used to help plan and improve the next step.

Cecilyn Foote, an associate engineer with the Department of Public Works, said that getting people involved in the project is important to make sure it shows how people really travel through the region every day.

“We’re excited to bring the community into the conversation as we work to make H Street a safer, more comfortable route for cyclists and pedestrians traveling to the Sacramento Valley Station,” said Foote.

“Your input helps us tailor the design so that it reflects the needs of the people who live, work, and travel here every day.”

The H Street Bikeway is planned to connect with Sacramento’s increasing network of segregated bike lanes and make it easier to go to one of the region’s most critical transportation hubs. There will be bike parking at City Hall for people who come to the event. This includes the plaza between the old and new buildings and the 9th Street side.

The city’s H Street Bikeway project webpage has further information about the project and a place to sign up for updates.
