Sacramento, California – A long vacant stretch of Stockton Boulevard has been given a new purpose. Where the former San Juan Motel once stood, 113 families now have the chance to build a future in a newly completed affordable housing community.
The transformation is more than a change of buildings. San Juan Apartments brings new homes, shared spaces and public art to a south Sacramento property that had remained unused for years, while keeping a visible piece of the site’s past.
Earlier this week, Sacramento city leaders joined Mutual Housing California, along with county, state and community partners, to celebrate the development’s grand opening. The gathering marked the completion of a project designed for families who often face some of the greatest pressure in the region’s housing market.

The apartments will serve households earning between 30 percent and 60 percent of the area median income. With 113 homes available, the development adds a substantial number of affordable units at a time when housing costs remain a major concern for working families.
San Juan Apartments was built as an all electric community. The project replaces the former motel site with permanent housing and a collection of amenities intended to make daily life more comfortable for residents.

Families will have access to a swimming pool, laundry facilities, a community room and off street parking. Those features create more than convenience. They also provide places where neighbors can gather, children can spend time outdoors and residents can take part in community activities close to home.
Although the site has been completely redeveloped, its earlier identity has not disappeared. The original San Juan Motel sign was restored and incorporated into the property, preserving a recognizable reminder of what once stood along Stockton Boulevard.
Colorful murals created by a local artist also bring new energy to the development. The artwork adds a community centered character to the property and helps connect the new apartments with the surrounding south Sacramento neighborhood.
The grand opening represents the final step in turning an empty motel property into housing for more than 100 families. It also reflects the combined work of city, county, state, nonprofit and community partners who helped move the project from an unused site to a completed residential community.
For the families moving into San Juan Apartments, the most important change is simple. A place that sat vacant now offers a place to call home.
