Sacramento, California – As part of its long-term improvement strategy, Sacramento International Airport is about to see an extensive expansion as a number of big projects move forward. Officials at the airport predict that 2026 will be a turning point. By the end of the year, many enhancements will be finished, and new ones will be started as the area continues to grow with more people, businesses, and tourists.

The airport is carrying out this work as part of a larger plan to update its facilities, make it easier for passengers to get around, and get ready for future demand. Planners have been working on making the airport easier to get around while upgrading the essential infrastructure behind the scenes because more passengers go through it each year.

A new elevated pedestrian walkway that will connect Terminal B to Concourse B is one of the most obvious modifications planned in 2026. The ADA-accessible walkway will have moving sidewalks, escalators, and elevators. It is set to debut in the summer. The new connection is meant to provide tourists additional options, make them less reliant on the automated tram system, and make it easier for people with mobility issues to get around.

A new parking garage is set to open later this year west of Terminal B. The building will offer about 5,500 parking spots, which will help with long-standing traffic problems and give passengers and visitors more options. Officials at the airport claim that the extra space will make parking easier at busy times and assist keep traffic moving near the entrances to the terminals.

In addition to making it easier for passengers to get to and park, the roads will also be improved. In 2027, a new exit road for Terminal A should be open. The goal of the project is to make traffic flow easier around the terminal, which will make arrivals and departures smoother and make the area safer overall.

In 2026, work will also start on a big extension of Concourse B. The project will take several years and will add more gates and more room to enable the growth of air service in the future. Officials argue that starting construction now is important for addressing long-term travel demand and bringing in more flight alternatives, even if the expansion will take several years to finish.

Starting in 2026, the airport will start to make incremental improvements in baggage handling equipment in both terminals. These modifications are meant to make things more reliable, help with ongoing maintenance demands, and make sure that luggage operations stay efficient as more people travel.

Airport officials stress that these renovations are just a small element of a larger set of enhancements that are happening across the airport. Along with the big construction projects, additional work continues to be carried out regarding safety, operations, and making customers more comfortable.

Officials say the development is an investment not only in infrastructure but also in the future of travel in the area. They contend that the goal is to make the airport more reliable, accessible, and efficient, even if construction causes some problems in the short term.
